Ballooning Instability in Polar Caps of Accreting Neutron Stars

چکیده
We assess the stability of Kruskal-Schwarzschild (magnetic Rayleigh-Taylor) type modes for accreted matter on the surface of a neutron star confined by a strong (& 10 G) magnetic field. Employing the energy principle to analyze the stability of short-wavelength ballooning modes, we find that line-tying to the neutron star crust stabilizes these modes until the overpressure at the top of the neutron star crust exceeds the magnetic pressure by a factor ∼ 8(a/h), where a and h are respectively the lateral extent of the accretion region and the density scale height. The most unstable modes are localized within a density scale height above the crust. We calculate the amount of mass that can be accumulated at the polar cap before the onset of instability. Magnetic field evolution of accreting neutron stars
We study the evolution of the magnetic field of an accreting neutron star in the frozen field and incompressible fluid approximations. The plasma is accreted onto two polar caps and squeezes some of the surface material of the neutron star toward the equator. The frozen B-field is then pushed toward the equator and is eventually buried there. The magnetic field within the polar cap areas, which...
متن کاملOld Isolated Accreting Neutron Stars: Contribution to the Soft X–ray Background in the 0.5–2 Kev Band
The issue of the observability of Old Isolated Neutron Stars (ONSs) accreting from the interstellar gas, is reconsidered using the spectra presented in Zampieri et al. (1995). In particular, we focus our attention on the overall soft X–ray emission of ONSs, which may provide a substantial contribution to the X–ray background in the 0.5–2 keV band. It is found that if accretion is channeled into...
متن کاملInstabilities, turbulence, and mixing in the ocean of accreting neutron stars
We consider the stability properties of the ocean of accreting magnetic neutron stars. It turns out that the ocean is always unstable due to the combined influence of the temperature and chemical composition gradients along the surface and of the Hall effect. Both the oscillatory and non-oscillatory modes can be unstable in accreting stars. The oscillatory instability grows on a short timescale...
متن کاملThe R-mode Instability in Rotating Neutron Stars
In this review we summarize the current understanding of the gravitational-wave driven instability associated with the so-called r-modes in rotating neutron stars. We discuss the nature of the r-modes, the detailed mechanics of the instability and its potential astrophysical significance. In particular we discuss results regarding the spin-evolution of nascent neutron stars, the detectability o...
متن کاملBurial of the polar magnetic field of an accreting neutron star – II. Hydromagnetic stability of axisymmetric equilibria
The theory of polar magnetic burial in accreting neutron stars predicts that a mountain of accreted material accumulates at the magnetic poles of the star, and that, as the mountain spreads equatorward, it is confined by, and compresses, the equatorial magnetic field. Here, we extend previous, axisymmetric, Grad–Shafranov calculations of the hydromagnetic structure of a magnetic mountain up to ...
